History

Garrett Burgess Griffin Royse, also known as Byrd Royse, was born on January 31, 1838, in Adair County, Kentucky, to William and Mary Stone Royse. He was one of 14 children. Around 1850, Royse's future grandmother-in-law, Mrs. Nancy McCasland, and her sons acquired land that would become Royse City.

Royse played a key role in routing the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railway line from Greenville to Dallas through Rockwall County. Royse City was established in 1885 alongside the railway, named in honor of G. B. Royse, who designed the town layout and sold the initial lots.

Initially, Royse City maintained a stable, small-town character, aided by its proximity to Garland and Dallas.

The construction of Interstate 30 to the south of the city in the mid-1960s prompted expansion towards the interstate.

By 2000, Royse City's population was 2,957, but the town began to experience the effects of the Dallas-Fort Worth area's rapid expansion. Its strategic location on Interstate 30 contributed to this growth.

Royse City's development continued, with new subdivisions expanding the city northward and southward. The U.S. Census Bureau recorded a population of 9,349 in 2010, marking a 216.2% increase.
